I dunno, but in the version of the pilot aired at Comic-Con,
Grunberg's wife was 1) portrayed by a different actress (IIRC) and 2)
(I remember this correctly), they were heading into marriage
counselling that was on the verge of turning into divorce proceedings.
Clearly, the show did reshoots and reconceptualized the relationship
between Grunberg's character and his wife -- heck, they reshot the
situation at the initial kidnapping situation from the second
episode/Grunberg's first appearance and recast the two detectives from
forgettable middle-aged guys to Clea DuVall and Stacy Haiduk.
Also, hotcha! Lisa Lackey (Grunberg's wife on the show) is, like, at
least a full decade younger than the real estate agent/future Mrs.
Medavoy that she played on the last season of NYPD Blue.

LORELAI: I am so done with plans. I am never, ever making one again.
It never works. I spend the day obsessing over why it didn't work
and what I could've done differently. I'm analyzing all my shortcomings
when all I really need to be doing is vowing to never, ever make a plan
ever again, which I'm doing now, having once again been the innocent
victim of my own stupid plans. God, I need some coffee.
