Recently got the series finale dvd set for "Alias" and it got me thinking
why I don't collect the "24" sets.
I am a sucker for this spy stuff and both shows were my favorite. There
just weren't any characters greater then Sydney Bristow and ESPECIALLY
Jack Baure. I mean Jack is THE best character on TV. THE reason why "24"
works, if at all.
But I don't have one season of "24". Why? It just doesn't beg for repeat
viweing the way "Alias" does. "Alias" really understood the concept, to me
more then any other show, of the importance of style and scene. You need
scenes that are memorable in order for a show like this to work in terms
of repeat viewing, a reasonm why Alias does so well on DVD.
Last year when Peyton blew up a helicopter is a prime example. "24"
wouldn't know how to shoot a scene like that. One scene that REALLy
disappointed me on "24" last season was when Jack had to do a last-minute
landing of a 747 on a stretch of highway. I was ready for something
fantastic. What did I get? A dreary scene that was shot poorly. It was at
that moment that I realized that "Alias" was tailor-made for a scene of
someone landing a plane on the highway. "24" didn't know what to do.
It's this simple reason why "24" doesn't work for me on DVD. "Alias" seems
really thematic on DVD. "24" doesn't have one scene that jumps out at me.
Other memorable "Alias" scenes:
Sydney watches while Sloan-clone descends down an elevator. Another
elevator (not just any elevator but a glass one on the exterior of the
building) explodes at the top and crashes to the ground.
Sydney discovering that her latest captor is her presumed dead mother.
Irina jumping off a building a and shooting every window on the way down
to crash into the one she'll escape through.
Sydney running over tables and karate kicking Will free.
Lauren exposed as a traitor.
Rachels place of employment blowing up.
And many more.
Do you agree or disagree?
