| Ever Wonder Why.
| June 13th, 2007
| . stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel never take part in GILMORE GIRLS
DVD
| commentaries? Well wonder no more. In a recent Emmy chat with Gold
Derby's
| Tom O'Neil, star Lauren Graham revealed the real reason why there are
never
| any 'girls' on the GILMORE GIRLS DVD commentaries.
|
| Jets57 asks: In the past you and Alexis both mentioned working on DVD
extras
| but they never seem to appear - what happened?
|
| Lauren Graham responds: We make no money on DVD so don't tend to do the
| commentary as we think that is unfair.
|
| Now there's a rarity in Hollywood, an honest answer! Kudos to Lauren
Graham
| for being so upfront with her fans. That said, does anyone else find it
a
| touch depressing that it all comes down to dollars and cents with stars
| Graham and Bledel? Who knew sitting down for forty-four minutes and
| commenting on a show you supposedly love was such an ardous task. How
much
| money would make these girls happy? If it wasn't clear before, it's more
| than clear now that the real reason fans didn't get a proper final
season
of
| the GILMORE GIRLS was simply due to the fact that the CW failed to back
up
a
| big enough Brinks truck
|
|
|
| [My Comment - I see nothing wrong with this position. The studios make
| buckets of money on the boxsets. If the studio wants actor
participation
| then they should be willing to pay.
|
| Obviously the studio doesn't think it is worth sharing the revenue for
the
| actors participation.]

It seems like there is more to it. I remember an interview a while ago
(maybe in the season 4 timeframe ?) where Alexis specifically mentioned
doing commentaries for a bunch of episodes. Those never materialized. Of
course, maybe the commentaries were just terrible, so the left them out.
You would also think that there would be a way for the studio to wrangle
participation out of its stars by defining these DVD extras as part of the
publicity duties required for the series.
That said, the DVD extras in general (when there were any) on the GG sets
were rather lame, so perhaps the studio didn't realize what a good
marketing
tool they could be. Unlike, say, Alias which would have interesting
interviews, behind-the-scenes stuff, a gag reel, and a bunch of
interesting
commentaries. One notable commentary was done by some rabid fans, and I
think a TWOP recapper, and it was hilarious. Of course GG lived for 2
more
seasons than Alias, so who is to say.
