OK. Lots of labels being hung here. Dogmatism, rigid orthodoxies,
"excommunication" of "heretics," the narcissism of small differences,
these
are the vices to which ideologues of all stripes are prone. I dont believe
in labels. The overwhelming majority of Americans (this is my opinion, so
dont ask for cites or bona fides) are all over the political spectrum.
So, what am I you ask yourself?
For me, I find myself on most tests to be in the middle or slightly to the
right.
This is what I'm for: (no particular order, certainly not complete, just a
rambling sampling)
1) Abortion in the first trimester (this one has become the most troubling
for me)
2) Use of early stage embryos in medical research
3) Maintaining a strong and powerful military (the use of which then
becomming probematic, when used in opposition to what I'm against)
4) The death penalty
5) flat tax
6) right size government (theres a rub here regarding defining what
constitutes a need for any government involvement at all) I dont believe
in
"minimal" state or outright anarchy. Certainly, defense, police, fire,
immigration control, and justice are requirements. Further, I think
government should play a role in safety, health, and environmental
regulation. Keep adding to the list, and you keep adding to the size of
government. How much should government get involved in the inspection of
incoming containers? Hard questions to answer, for sure. How much is
enough?
In short, Im for a significant retrenching and restructuring of government
spending and controls.
7) full privitazion of Social Security
8) school vouchers
9) strong immigration enforcement
10) three strike laws
11) significant mandatory jail time for DUI
12) Bin Laden's head on a stick
13) Dropping political labels, and discussing issues one at a time.
This is what I'm against:
1) big government, both federal and state
2) flag burning amendment
3) prayer in school amendment
4) racial preferences
5) laws against prostitution
6) most drug laws (the government involvement here is ridiculous)
7) US post office (let private enterprise compete here)
8) multi billion dollar no bid contracts
9) welfare
10) Iraq invasion and continued occupation
11) seat belt laws and helmet for adults
