I'm not joking.
How else can you explain Spike not getting a stake through his heart
after his attempt to get the chip removed in "Out of my Mind" or
kidnapping Buffy in "Crush"? Buffy not only doesn't stake him, she
keeps turning to him for help protecting Dawn and her mother.
Even after Buffy was gone, Spike continued to hang around, protecting
Dawn.
