I like the term "artificially retrofitted."  That being said, I don't
know that Giles betraying Buffy is necessarily any more implausible
than, say, Xander doing so.  It's just that the way "Empty Places" is
written, the others don't need to go to the places Giles does, plus
they have an episode and a half specifically devoted to trying to get
them there.  With Giles, on the other hand, I do believe there's an
intention to tell a specific story with him taking on the mantle of
the kind but still paternalistic and ultimately wrong-thinking
authority figure.
