Additional comments on S4D6: As Tim comment, ATS quickly became much
more personal than the original idea of doing a metaphor for young
adulthood where _Buffy_ tackled broody melodramatic adolescence and
post-adolescence. But this time they went for it, blunt and
straightforward (which makes me wonder why I didn't pick up on it,
given that it's not subtle). Team Angel, All Growed Up, gets a job
working for the Man, nervous for the state of its soul but determined
to keep its idealism intact while making a mark in the corporate
world. Right out of the psyche of a broody melodramatic twenty-
something.
Hey, remember the days when "season overview" featurettes consisted of
stories and thoughts and such rather than just people summarizing the
plot at us?
If I average my ratings across seasons, Season Four finishes slightly
behind S3 for the lead, which feels about right, and ties with S1,
which actually doesn't seem so far off if one is thinking purely
episode by episode. However, the other factor is that I rank 73% of
S4 episodes as Good or higher. That's a far greater proportion than
any other year of ATS, and tied with the mighty BTVS S3. (Still not
_Firefly_ territory, though. I don't know if any show will ever match
that one for "quality percentage.") S4 doesn't achieve Excellence as
often as my very favorite eras, but it's admirable for how
consistently it's worth watching.
I think I should get wine for the season break.
