Bad writing in the former case, but it's not the first time Buffy has
refused to kill Spike, including after a betrayal; as I argued during
the first run-through, the chip makes a difference to her between
murder and self-defense. I can't see her staking him post-FFL.

I don't think you need to introduce a mystical compulsion there. He's
a sorta-ally who can be bought off and/or is devoted to her (depending
on the point in the series) and has superpowers.

He wasn't even haunted by the memory of Buffy and his promise to her,
either.

The thing about Spike deciding he was in love with Buffy because of
Dawn sure reads like a joke, given that he shows no desire to protect
Dawn (or indeed, any scenes with or mention of her as far as I can
remember) until Buffy tells him to ("Checkpoint" is the first
example). Whereas he first realizes his feelings for Buffy at the end
of OOMM, eight episodes earlier.
