Yes, it would behoove a more intelligent vampire to try and 
cripple/capture a slayer rather than kill one. However you'll soon learn 
not to think too hard about pretty much anything in Buffy as your brain 
will melt :)

It's fun television, very fun for the most part, but it's never going to 
win a prize for good plotting. Wait until you get to the end of season 7 
and come to the odd realisation that the series never bother to actually 
explain what a vampire was.
