so much to ponder....
Compare Carnivale to Harry Potter for good theological insight. First
off,
I'm not sure you saw the episode (might've been end of
season 1), where "management" tells Ben that Ben has to take over his
job because "I'm dying"....so, maybe he was dying anyway, & didn't
want to go slow. I think that was right before or after mgt tricked
Ben into killing Lodz (the bearded lady's lover/husband, whatever).
Also, the bearded lady & Lodz were always up to no good, manipulating
people like mad, especially Ben...Lodz wanted something from Ben --
sight. So no surprise that when Lodz comes back telling beardie that
he was murdered cold -- he don't mention that he got murdered because
he had killed Ruthy (AB) in order to get mgt. to give him his sight.
Ben killed him to give Ruthy BACK the life that Lodz had taken...in my
view, that ain't murder, that's fair exchange, or the devil's due.
Following your theory that everybody gets some of the spirit, what
ben sacrifices to heal them...which makes sense...then Ruthy's son has
got some fish in him.
It's also possible that Lodz managed to take over Ruthy, not only
because he's very powerful, but because he'd already taken HER life
into himself before Ben saved her...AND, I think it's possible that
Ben did a sloppy job of saving her, letting go too soon, because of
his history with her. He tells her that he saved her because he
"couldn't stand to see" her son as upset as he was (kin?). (Ben &
Ruthy had an affair, which ended mighty ugly when the bearded lady &
Lodz told Ben that Ruthy had had an affair with Hack Scudder...which
Ruthy refused to deny or confirm...she just said, rightly, it ain't
none of your goddamn business.
Now my other thinkin' is that something is up with the generation
gap...Ben is more Sofie's generation than Alexi's, what is up with
that? Also, there is yet to be a tie why Ben was tormented with
dream-visions of "management's" WWI fight where he lost 3 of his 4
limbs, & being chased through those cornfields by men with the tree
tatoo...and also, Ben (in the dreams) was chased by
Scudder....interesting, if Scudder tormented "Mgt" so bad, why did he
get to abused for "hiding", "running chicken"??? I think maybe
you're
right that Hack was not as frail as everybody seemed to think. Look
how he tore the heart out of that guy, but only after he didn't fulfil
his promise. And another one who does not seem so lame as to have not
noticed Alexi in the back seat is that evil people-butcher who
collected Scudder...though I guess it's possible that Alexi snuck in
after he'd gone into the cottage.
Now the next thing on my mind is, now that we know Sofie's gonna find
Ben's vision mask in the next episode, will she then use it? Sofie
always responds from emotion, never reason. I'm hoping Norman will
get through to her...and that's amazing that I'm here routing for a
fictional character 75 years in the past.
