The father-daughter relation****p in "Lucy: Daughter of the Devil" is a
lot of fun to watch. A good part of the credit for the comedic chemistry
between Lucy and her pop should go to the voice work of Mellissa Bardin
Galsky and H. Jon Benjamin, both veterans of "Home Movies". It require
more than strong leads, however, to make a series click. Fortunately,
"Lucy" also has some strong sup****ting characters.
A case in point is Becky, the "Devil's Advocate", and also voiced by
Galsky. First of all, will somebody *please* give an Emmy or an Annie or
some award to the Becky's designer? The very idea that she would still
attempt the "dress for success" look in spite of having a skull for a
head is LOL funny. Becky's primary role seems to be keeping Satan
focused. She's really needed, for many times Satan seems no more
interested in the Apocalypse than Lucy is. But have you noticed that
Becky's devotion to the cause of pure evil tends to make her as much of
a killjoy as Sister Mary? Sister Mary's single-minded focus on piety
leads her to perform many disheartening and (paradoxically) immoral
acts. But is Becky, with her constant emphasis on the end-of-the-world
agenda, really any better?
Maybe that is the real point of the series: pure evil and pure goodness
are really just two sides of the same coin. These pure positions are
immoral, inhuman, and frankly not much fun. When Satan and Lucy ignore
Becky's advice, or when the fathers ignore the pompous and annoying
Sister Mary, they become the series role models.
Besides, why is the Apocalypse so gosh darned im****tant anyways? If Lucy
and Satan fail to carry it out, it's not like it's the end of the world.
