True, but as the Harry Potter movies have shown, it's possible to do a 
good job...at least some of the time.  The first HP movie seems to have 
done the best job, with the later ones being little more than a highlight 
reel of key scenes that only the fans can follow.

As I mentioned, the TV series AS aired earlier was how the characters were
originally created, with the exception that in the comics, Lupin had 
little to no qualms about killing someone.  Basically, he was James Bond 
as a super thief, instead of super agent.  Fujiko had no qualms about 
using her...enormous tracts of land...to get what she wanted from her 
victims - and that included Lupin.  Lupin's partners often threatened to 
kill Fujiko due to her previous treachery, but Lupin always stepped in to 
protect her..even though it usually meant getting burned by one of her 
scams once again.

Miyazaki toned down the more violent and ***ual aspects of the characters 
when he did Cagliostro, and later, a few seasons of the animated series.

That said, Cagliostro is still easily on my personal list of top 10 movies

of all times.
