The arist has stated publically that she doesn't do endings because she 
really doesn't want things to end or change.  This is why her other 
popular series, Ranma and Urusei Yatsura, have no proper ending either - 
just the hint that the zaniness continues on forever, unchanged.  This is 
a very Japanese theme, and is the central idea behind the UY movie,
Beautiful 
Dreamer.

Oddly, she did do one story that has a proper ending called Maison Ikkoku,

which is about a student who failed his college exams, and is trying to 
study so he can re-take them while living in a boarding house filled with 
other odd tenants.  This is considered to be her best work by many fans, 
even though it's not the sort of endless money-making-machine her other 
shows are.
