To be (somewhat) fair, my understanding is that the sequence with Vegeta
"destroying a world" in his first appearance was inaccurately presented,
though whether that's the fault of the dub or because (as I seem to
recall) that part was filler I don't remember. What he actually seems to
have done, if you look at the episode in question, is to have sent out
large numbers of comparatively small ki blasts rather than one uber-huge
one, to (presumably individually) kill each and every person on the
planet. He did not at that stage have anywhere near enough power to
actually blow up a planet (even the "kill everyone on it" is stretching
things - nothing like that was depicted again until the second/third
form of Majin Buu).

(This now seems to have become a minorly respectable example of what is
known as "thread drift"...)
