It's a combination of factors:
1. The ratings for the majority of anime currently running on TV aren't as
high as they could be.
2. Acquisition costs for most recent anime are stupidly high, because the
Japanese studios have scented blood in the water.
3. I hate to say it, but...
Most of the anime coming out of Japan lately just...isn't that good. More
and more, the shows being run are highly derivative, repetitive crap. The
few genuinely likeable, fresh, original shows don't fit the target
demographic for the TV networks, or are iffy, risky propositions that tend
to discourage active investment. Plus, a lot of the better stuff would
only
appeal to the hardcore otaku audience--viewers who already understand a
significant amount of Japanese culture, and thus would actually "get it".
There's an unfortunate tendency to avoid shoujo titles like the
plague--and
the few times one DOES manage to show up over here, it gets butchered.
Then
you get the weird, artistic shows like Paranoia Agent--they're very good
shows, but they're so offbeat that a lot of people don't quite get them,
so
they stop watching.
I can think of several series which I'd personally love to see turn up on
Adult Swim or SciFi, but which aren't likely to make it for various
reasons:
- Full Metal Panic: If this weren't an ADV title, it'd probably BE on
Adult
Swim. Unfortunately, ADV is holding their titles close to the heart,
because
of their joke of an anime network that NOBODY EVEN GETS.
- Last Exile: I fail to understand how this has never turned up on TV. It
seems to me it'd be perfect fodder for Adult Swim.
- Kamichu!: Entirely too Japanese and too cute-shoujo. Which is a shame; I
think people would enjoy it.
- Kino's Journey: Another ADV title, which is probably why nobody even
attempted it; also, it's a VERY cerebral and artistic series, along the
same
vein as Paranoia Agent, so people might not "get" it.
- Haruhi: The FLCL fans would LOVE this.
Sadly, Adult Swim has its head too far up its own ass to consider trying
to
revive anime...
