Depending on a number of things... Here's my initial impression:
for dozing off in the cab, Ambien has a relatively long after affect
(and a lovely condition often referred to as Ambienesia - ambien
+amnesia, doing things you don't remember doing, but that doesn't fit
this example), so since Nick had thrown away his "uppers", he still
had the remaining after effect of the sleeping pill, mixed with
alcohol.
Another thing that they don't talk about with Ambien is the visual
hallucinations. I've actually watched my carpet "crawl" after I've
taken my nighttime dose, before I go to bed. He could have been
tripping from a combo of sleeping pill/alcohol.
I also wondered about what might have been in the drinks (and maybe
the next show will answer if he was "Micky Finned") since his response
seemed a bit more dramatic than the normal visual hallucination.

If one of the CSI:Miami writers came over, it could be something like
this, but I doubt it'll end up being that clear cut.
