He isn't the only one. The detectives on Law & Order (original) have
worn it many times. The pin has a large D in the center, and looks
something like a highly stylized 'star' with more points than any
standard police stars.
I've seen them on the lapels of Colorado Bureau of Investigation
agents as well. I just figure they are detective pins, maybe it's
like military badges that are recognizable to members but not the
public in general.
