Ah but then, technically then, it isn't a double entendre. A double
entendre might be Mae West saying "Come over and see me sometime"
because it could be either an innocent invitation or an invitation for
***. Lauren Bacall was just giving instructions as to how to
whistle. It may sound dirty because of the way she said it but there
was no obvious other way to interpret the meaning of what she said.

I've actually, by the way, seriously had students who've had
incredibly ***y voices and that was just their normal way of
speaking. It was very distracting, yes, but you can't cry ***ual
harassment simply based on the tone of someone's voice. Can you
imagine Hodges complaining to somebody "Catherine told me that to use
a pair of scissors I need to put my fingers in the holes and
squeeze!" Anyone taking the complaint would then say "And...?"

Except "put you lips together and blow" is a perfectly good
description of how to whistle and doesn't suggest anything else. "Put
your fingers in the holes and squeeze" is also a perfectly good
description of how to use scissors. I don't know if _that_ line would
have gotten past censors in the forties, however. Did people refer to
orifaces as "holes" back then? :)

Frankly, it was Hodges reaction that told me that HE had interpretted
as ***ual. Catherine has 100% deniability here because, as his
supervisor, it's her duty to make sure that he knows how to properly
use a pair of scissors. :)
