Appealing to the lowest common denominator?  Actually, I think some of
the viewers of those shows enjoy watching people get made fools of,
disguised as "constructive criticism".  Why else would the "try out"
shows be so widely watched?

People want to laugh at others who think they have talent when they
don't (like Mr. Hung I think his name was).  They also enjoy laughing
at people who do things embarrassing to themselves.  It's why
practical jokes are so popular, the human animal is cruel at heart.
