There are two sides to this, in all probability. Yes, there's truth to
the fact that HBO would have allowed it to become a much more edgy
show. That would have led many of us to consider it potentially a
better show.

However, there's the fact that as much as HBO and pay cable in general
is gaining rapidly in popularity, it's still in a relatively small
percentage of U.S. homes. Given that's the case even now, it would
have had really no chance then to break out to a cultural sensation
that it became thanks to a huge viewer****p on NBC.
