The key word might be "acceptable." It's certainly not, at least in my
mind, an acceptable contraction under any cir***stance.
Your argument is identical to the one raised by fellow illiterates
when "ain't" was included in the dictionary back in the '60s. Might
have been there, but it didn't make it any more acceptable.
