It seems looking back that a lot of the threads that happened during the
1985-86 season were recycled in some form or another later on.

For instance, Jamie's death was simply repeated in a different fashion,
through an avalanche instead. The same threads were repeated for stories
such as Ben Stivers, it looked like, who was headed towards being Jock
Ewing, I strongly speculate, as there were hints Ben was not who is
proported to be. When Patrick Duffy decided to return, it seems that they
simply scrapped the Ben character, but gave the actor the new name of Wes
Parmalee to run with. Remember, they likely had paid for the actor's
contract to run through a multi-episode arc, so when the dream season
ended,
they had to restart with a new character, which they did during episode #1
of the 1986-87 season.
Sue Ellen going blind was simply a red herring in the end, as was the
explosion of Jack's car with Jamie dead. Clayton's disappearance
doubtfully had anything to do with Ben Stivers; it was likely that they
planned a heart attack while Clayton was on his horse and he fell. This
thread was repeated after the dream season during the Oil Baron's Ball
when
Clayton did actually have this heart attack, and J.R. grabbed the mike and
said "Is there a doctor in the house? Clayton's having a heart attack".
The writers likely had very little time to wrap up the threads neatly, so
they were just cut off, and then stories were recycled to get the show
back
on track. Regretfully it really had trouble getting back on, but then
that
was almost an impossible task given that a whole year of the show was
ripped
out of the sequence.
Just my thoughts on where they were headed, given the circumstances,
storyline hints dropped during the end of the season, and stories that
followed in the following seasons.
