Jays are smart birds (and opportunists).

I had a bluejay that would fly down to my feet to eat peanuts. Often, it 
would fly off with the nuts and always in the same direction. I wondered 
about that until one day she brought several baby jays with her. They 
watched as she flew down to eat the peanut; then, they imitated her. I 
was living north at the time, so they all migrated for the winter.
