Barnabas rises, "Would you care for a cup of coffee?" Vickie shakes
her head. "Its getting late, I think you should take me home." Barnabas
is about to ask Vickie a question when they hear a loud crash of
thunder. Going to the window Barnabas looks up to the night sky. Vickie
joins him. A flash of lightening startles them. Turning away from the
window they both look at the album then at each other.
Vickie walks over to the album, picking it up she asks... "I suppose
I could sleep in Josette's room." Barnabas agrees. Before she could
stop, the book flies open in Vickie's hand. A single picture drops to
the floor. "This picture doesn't have Elizabeth in it." Vickie picks it
up and looks at it carefully. Barnabas can see that Vickie is
remembering something. "What is it Vickie? Let me see that picture."
Vickie can't speak.
Barnabas takes the picture from her hand. Looking at it he says.
"It's just Roger, he is embracing a lovely young woman and kissing her
cheek as he looks at the camera, he looks very happy." Vickie points
to the picture. "That is why he's happy I think." Barnabas looks at
Vickie then back to the picture. "Oh, I see, his hand is very discreetly
covering her bosom, well she doesn't seem to mind." Vickie gives
Barnabas a side glance. "But I know her Barnabas, I know who she is."
Barnabas hands her the picture. "How do you know her?" Holding the
photo Vickie explains. "This is Betty Handscombe, I first saw her
portrait at Sam Evans' house, Maggie invited me to dinner once, I
thought she was my mother."
Barnabas feels bewildered... "You mean there's a chance that Roger is
your father? but you said that Elizabeth told you she was your Mother,
that can't be." Vickie wonders aloud. "What if Elizabeth was protecting
Roger? that he and Betty Handscombe are my real parents?" Barnabas
shows his doubts. "I don't think Elizabeth would say she was your Mother
if she was not." Looking back at the photo, Vickie grins. "Your
probably right, besides I don't think I would want Roger as my Father."
Vickie pretends to quiver. Barnabas laughs.
Placing the picture back in the book, Vickie and Barnabas start to go
upstairs. Vickie turns back, picks up her purse and follows Barnabas.
They stop at Josette's door. "I can't tell you how much being with you
has made me feel Barnabas." But Barnabas will hear nothing of it. "It's
my pleasure Vickie, in the morning we will take the pictures back to
Collinwood, I think once the Will is read we will know everything."
Vickie nods her head. "I hope so." Barnabas smiles and says. "Good
Night Vickie." Vickie replies, "Sleep well Barnabas." They part as
Vickie closes the bedroom door.
Undressing to her slip Vickie gets into bed, she remembers the small
book and takes it out of her purse. Holding it she thinks to herself.
"Elizabeth held this book, just like I'm doing right now." Opening it
she reads the first page. The days and nights of Miss Elizabeth Murdoch
Collins. Vickie utters... "Murdoch, that was Jamison's Mother's maiden
name.
Turning the page Vickie reads some of Elizabeth's romances. " Dear
Journal, Bill Malloy and I kissed outside in the gazebo, he want's to
make love to me, he told me so... I don't know if I will or not.."
Vickie laughs at how innocent Elizabeth speaks about sex. A few pages
later she learns that they almost did! The next few page makes Vickie
feel strange. Her eyes dart back and forth.. her breathing becomes
quick and shallow... Vickie is beginning to feel warm, very warm.
Placing the book on the bed, Vickie looks around the room. Slipping
out of bed she walks to the bedroom door, she opens it. Vickie looks
down the hall... she sees Barnabas' room. Walking to it she looks at
the bottom of the door, the light goes out. Placing her hand on the
knob Vickie turns it very slowly, and enters the room.... then closes
the door quietly.
Back on the bed in Josette's room the journal opened... the passage
that made Vickie go to Barnabas read....." I have fallen in love, I know
this is the one man for me... I love him with all my heart, I am going
to give him my virginity tonight!" With a sudden gust of wind the next
page read: "Oh my god! that Monster! Paul Stoddard rapped me!"
