Barnabas sat on the settee watching Vickie as she slept... every now and
then he would turn his head and gaze at Josette's portrait then turn to
watch Vickie. His thoughts were ranging from the obvious to the
absurd... "I know in my heart I love you Vickie, I want you to be mine,
to live the rest of my life with only you...I would hold you, care for
you, make you happy. We would make love in the wee hours of the
morning, but I don't know how you feel about me." Barnabas thought he
would go mad thinking about these things, but his mind wouldn't stop.
Vickie stirs in her rest. "Mmmm." Barnabas checks the time on his
watch, it reads 7:40 pm going to the bed Barnabas puts out his hand, he
is about to wake her, he hears Vickie whisper.."Elliott, please... no,
please, stop.. I love him." Suddenly Vickie bolts up in bed, her eyes
wide open. Barnabas is startled but remains close. Breathing heavily
Vickie sees Barnabas, jumping into his arms she hugs him tightly.
"Barnabas, I had such a strange dream, I have to tell you.. before I
forget it.. I have to tell you." Barnabas sits on the bed by Vickie's
side. "Calm down, it's all right, I'm here now." Vickie looks at his
handsome face, she looks at his soft moist lips, slowly she leans
forward.... Barnabas holds her shoulders. "What is it Vickie." Vickie
stops. "I want to kiss you Barnabas, I want to love you."
Barnabas smiles, "We really must be going to Collinwood, the reading of
the Will." Vickie nods her head, "Oh yes, I won't be long getting
dressed... I'll be right down." Barnabas didn't know how to take
Vickie's profession of love for him, was she sincere... or was this only
a stage of morning over Elliott.
Making sure everything was locked up tight, Barnabas is just putting
on his coat when Vickie comes down the stairs. Holding her coat open
Barnabas helps Vickie put it on. "Wait here I will bring the car to the
door. Barnabas steps out to get the car. Vickie stands in the small
foyer of the Old House. "I know its been a short time but I think I've
always loved Barnabas... strange how I thought I loved Burke, then
Peter, then marrying Elliott.... when its Barnabas I've always loved."
Vickie is deep in thought when the door opens. Barnabas leads her to
the car, help her get in and closes the door. They drive on to
Collinwood.
Once again they are gathered in the drawing room of Collinwood. The
one exception is that Willie Loomis is now among them. Tony Peterson
stands before them. " Before reading the Will, I feel we must all give
our condolences to Mrs. Stokes for the loss of her husband, we are very
sorry Vickie." This makes Vickie feel badly, after her thoughts about
Barnabas, and what they had done together. Tony clears his throat. "Now
to the matter at hand."
Sitting on the sofa Barnabas leans towards Vickie, taking her hand in
his, he whispers. "Vickie... I love you." Vickie looks at Barnabas. "I
know, I love you too." they both smile at each other.
Opening the large folder Tony begins to read.
