I thought by now Dark Shadows fandom would be all abuzz over the passing
this week of DS ghost actor David Groh. Still a young man in his 60's,
Groh died on Tuesday.
His most high-profile one-day role on the show was as one of the body part
donors for Adam. When Nicholas Blair was seeking Dr Lang's MIA creation,
Blair summoned the spirits of the parts' original owners and asked them
for directions.
In the 70's, Groh achieved a distinction shared by few other DS veterans;
his picture was on the cover of TV Guide, thanks to his co-starring role
as Joe Gerard on the semi-successful "Rhoda" sitcom. (When Groh arrived
at the Pearly Gates this week, was Carlton, the Doorman on duty to let him
in?)
Groh returned to the monster genre in the X-Files episode about Mulder and
Scully investigating murders that Mulder believed were committed by a
Golem.
Whoever wrote Groh's obituary included Dark Shadows among the actor's
credits. (Yay!) David Groh was one DS vet I was hoping I'd get to meet
someday at a Fest (or elsewhere), but as far as I know, he never attended
one.
