The Final Days and Nights of Sarah Collins Chapter three
Sarah Stands alone in the semi darkness of the top of the stairs, she
feels very lonely. Listening to the muffed voices down in the drawing
room. The voice of her Father Joshua is demanding, Sarah knows whom he
is speaking to... Barnabas. Sarah can also hear the soothing tones of
her Mother Naomi, trying to calm Joshua, without success thanks to
Abigail Collins, Barnabas and Sarah's maiden Aunt, who also lives in the
great mansion with her Brother Joshua and sister in law Naomi.
Sarah knows not to venture down among the adults, no doubt her Father
would only send the little girl back up to her room in tears. "I hope
Barnabas won't forget to come up and say good night to me." she hopes.
It had been storming most of that week, with the arrivals of Cousin's
Daniel and Millicent, Sarah thought she would at long last have a
playmate in Daniel, unfortunately Cousin Millicent kept her brother
Daniel occupied with unpacking and running errands around the house for
her as well as keeping her company.
Past her bed time Sarah stays up waiting for someone to see her there,
hopefully Barnabas, so that he could take her to bed and wish her
pleasant dreams... Barnabas always made Sarah feel safe and loved.
Barnabas and Josette's Wedding was fast approaching, everyone was much
to busy to notice little Sarah. It seemed that where ever Sarah went
she was told to run along and play, except for Father, who would cruelly
utter how much she was underfoot and send her away.
Sarah did have one thing to look forward to, that was the arrival of
her new governess, Miss Wick, who was hired to teach Sarah how be a well
brought up lady and one day run a household as big or bigger than
Collinwood... Sarah didn't understand what that meant but was glad that
some one was going to be with her, even if she was just a governess.
One afternoon Sarah had just gone down for her nap when she felt she
needed to go down to the front door, getting out of bed Sarah skillfully
sneaks downstairs, she hears Barnabas' voice and that of someone else.
Opening the door Sarah steps out, there stands Barnabas with a strange
girl, Sarah does not notice that she is dressed differently, only that
she resembles the drawing she made, Sarah was sure that this was her new
governess.
Barnabas as always is patient but firm with his little sister. "Sarah
, I thought I put you down for a nap." Sarah knew that her sweet smile
would always keep her out of trouble where Barnabas was concerned. "I
was Barnabas, but I just knew that my new governess was here... I wanted
to come down and welcome her... you are my new governess aren't you."
Barnabas looks at the young girl to hear her reply.
The young girl was Victoria Winters, who had mysteriously appeared not
far from Collinwood, except that Vickie thought she was at the Old
House, she was unaware that she was standing before the first
Collinwood. Confused Vickie replies that she is indeed the governess,
that her carriage had turned over and she lost her introduction to the
family. "My name is Victoria Winters."
Barnabas tells Sarah that she must go back to bed for her nap, Sarah
does as she is told, but before leaving she speaks one word of french,
meaning goodbye. " That's french, I'm learning it for the wedding."
With that Barnabas ushers his little sister back into the house with a
firm demand for her to return to her nap... Sarah didn't mind being
scolded by Barnabas she knew that his heart was not mean or wicked.
Not going straight up to her room Sarah hides and watches as Barnabas
brings Miss Winters in then takes her upstairs... Sarah is glad Miss
Winters had arrived. It was then that Sarah noticed how oddly her new
governess was dress. Sarah sneaks back into her room, falling on the
bed she takes Samantha in her arms and tells her all about meeting her
new governess.... when she falls fast asleep.
After seeing to Miss Winters Barnabas walks into Sarah's room...
watching his little sister napping brought comfort to his heart. Walking
around the bed Barnabas leans down, kissing little Sarah 's cheek, he
whispers. "Now you shan't be alone little one, I love you so much."
