The Final Days and Nights of Sarah Collins
Chapter four
Collinwood was dark, save for the few candles tended by servants during
the night. In the twilight of her sleep Sarah hears the faint whisper
of a young voice. "Sarah... Sarah..." Drowsy but not fully awake
Sarah opens her eyes. "Hello." The small voice is coming from close
by. Sarah looks around her room with sleepy eyes, she listens very
carefully, trying to find the voice that summons her. Standing by her
window Sarah hears distant thunder, opening the shutter she feels the
wind of an upcoming storm, feeling a chill her little hand brings the
shutter in, and locks the window tight. Again Sarah hears her name.
"Sarah, Please." Looking around her room it is too dark to see, Sarah
creeps to her bed and lights a small candle.
Walking slowly Sarah listens... the voice is gone, stopping before her
dresser mirror Sarah Startles herself. She looks at her reflection,
when suddenly Sarah sees something that astonishes her. Staring at
herself, Sarah knows she is looking at herself, although her refection
is different. Sarah turns to run back to bed. "Sarah no, please don't."
Turning back Sarah hears her mirror twin speak. "Am I dreaming....
mirror people can't talk." "They can if they are me Sarah." The little
girl is confused. "But I am you, I mean you are me." the mirror Sarah
laughs, that makes Sarah feel less afraid. Sarah sees that her mirror
twin is dressed in a long white dress and is wearing her bonnet, and
that she is very pale.
"Sarah I can't stay very long, you must help Miss Winters... I sent
her to you so that she will see what happened." " What do you mean to
see what happened, I don't understand." Sarah's reflection looks very
sad... "I have to go now." As Sarah's mirror twin fads she keeps
asking that Sarah help Miss Winters... Soon Sarah is gazing upon her
true mirror image.
Slowly walking back to bed Sarah knows she can not tell anyone what
just occurred... "No one would believe me if I did." She whispers
silently. Slipping back into bed Sarah wondered what the other Sarah
meant and why that Sarah looked so different.
Very early in the morning Vickie wakes, she wonders downstairs... when
Jeremiah Collins enters the house, Vickie sees him and thinking that is
is Burke she throws her arms around his neck. Jeremiah is shocked.
"Please Miss, surely I'm not accustomed to being welcomed home in this
manner." Vickie is embarrassed and blushes. "Please forgive me, I- I
thought you were someone else." Jeremiah smiles, Vickie sees the
splitting image of her beloved Burke, then Vickie remembers Burke died
in a plane crash in the jungle. Vickie turns away and begins to cry.
"Oh please don't cry Miss, I won't tell Joshua of your misbehaviour."
All Vickie can utter is a thank you, then runs up the stairs to her
room.
Later in the day, after Sarah's lessons Vickie watches as the Countess
places her tarot on the table in her room and wonders...."Maybe if I
change the cards around it will help them to beware that danger is
close, I'll wait till I can come in her alone and change them around."
LIttle does Vickie know that she will soon be accused of being a
witch.
