The Final Days and Nights of Sarah Collins Chapter Six
Shortly after her lesson Sarah looked out her window, she saw Miss
Winter's speaking to her Uncle Jeremiah, when She heard a noise outside
her room, going to her door, Sarah saw Ben walking down the hall, his
feet are so big they make a stomping noise as he walks.
Stepping out, she walks up to him. "What are you doing here Ben, you
never came up in this part of the house before, unless you were with
Barnabas, is Barnabas with you." her pretty little face lit up as she
asked after her brother.
Ben bowed his head.. "N-no Miss Sarah, he ain't with me... I'm not
going into your brother's room." Sarah noticed that they were standing
in front of Jeremiah's room, she looks at Ben.
Ben smiles. "Your Uncle Jeremiah asked me to get something for him,
that's why I'm up here, you understand." Sarah nods her head. "What
are you going to get for him." Ben was getting nervous, but he knew
that he had to get what Angelique wanted, so he came up with an idea.
"Oh I'm getting his handkerchief, he said, your Uncle said he was going
to be needin it I think." Sarah sadly replies. "Oh,I guess I won't be
seeing Barnabas again today." As Ben watches Sarah walk away Ben enters
Jeremiah's room.
Skillfully Ben finds what Angelique told him to take from Jeremiah's
room. No one but Sarah saw him, and he was sure that Sarah wouldn't
tell anyone because she was thinking more about her brother than
anything else.
That afternoon was nice, Sarah sat playing before the fire place as
her Mother Naomi sat close by. Suddenly Sarah clutches at her chest and
screams out. "Mother! it hurts!" Then falls to the floor unconscious.
Naomi calls for some one to help her.
The doctor was sent for but could not give any reason for Sarah to be
in so much pain, "Give this to the child." The doctor gives Naomi a
bottle. "It will make her sleep, perhaps it will help her with some of
the discomfort... I"m sorry but I can not find a medical reason for her
ailment." Naomi takes the medicine. "Thank you doctor, I know you are
doing what's best for Sarah." Naomi helps Sarah to take the medicine,
Sarah begins to feel sleepy, but says that she is still in pain. Naomi
is so worried for her little girl.
Later that day Barnabas comes to Sarah's room. Sarah is glad to see
her brother... but is in so much pain. Going to her bed Barnabas tries
to comfort his little sister. "Is there anything I can get you Sarah."
He takes her small hand in his. "My doll, Samantha, I couldn't find
her, please find her for me Barnabas, I need her." Barnabas promises to
find Sarah's little friend. Sarah falls to sleep.
Angelique hears of little Sarah's illness, she goes into her room.
Taking out Sarah's doll, from her apron, Angelique holds up the doll
touching the large pin that is lodged in its shoulder. "You've worked
very well for me little doll, now I will go and make Barnabas mine
again, I will offer him a cure in exchange for a wedding band."
Angelique hides the doll under her pillow and walks casually out of her
room.
