The Final Days and Nights of Sarah Collins chapter 11
Prior to the wedding Joshua had disappeared, keeping Jeremiah from
leaving Collinwood. Sarah knew that her Uncle and Josette were seeing
each other secretly.
With the sudden presents of a black and white cat Abigail spoke openly
that she regarded Miss Winters as the witch.
Sarah did not mind that her Father had gone, she knew Joshua would
have the cat taken away.
The Wedding day had dawned, Sarah tried so very hard to speak to her
brother.... being politely rebuffed. "Sarah please, you are much to
young to understand how important today is." Barnabas would say to her.
Sarah went to her room, feeling angry and insulted. "You wouldn't think
so if you knew my secret." She thought to herself. Suddenly Sarah
knew what she must do.
Walking down the hallway Sarah decided to speak to Josette.
Placing her hand on the door knob Sarah hears Josette's voice. "Yes I
love this dress, I know Barnabas will love it when he sees it." Another
voice speaks... "Yes Madam, it is a lovely dress." Sarah wanted listen
further, she had heard that voice somewhere, but where.
Quietly opening the door just a little Sarah peeks in. Standing in
the middle of the room Josette is wearing her wedding dress, as her maid
helps her prepare for the ceremony. Angelique asks.. "My lady I do not
have much, but I was hoping you would wear this on your wedding gown."
Josette looks, Angelique is holding a somewhat old blue rag that was
made into what one might think was a flower. At first glance Josette
did not want it pinned to her perfect wedding gown, although as she
looked at Angelique's smile she could not help but to give in to her
request.
Sarah almost laughed when she saw Angelique pin it on Josette's dress.
"Oh yes my lady it makes your gown more perfect. Josette is much to
polite and in a good humor on her wedding day to disagree. Suddenly
Sarah remembers where she had heard the maid's voice..whispering.."My
dream." Sarah stares at Angelique, who turns and from the corner of her
eye, sees Sarah.
Sarah and Angelique's eyes meet... Knowing she is discovered, Sarah
backs away into the hallway... Angelique excuses herself and follows
her. "Excuse me Sarah were you just eavesdropping on my lady and me."
Sarah only looks up at her when Angelique takes her by the arm. "I am
speaking to you girl.." In that instant Sarah was sure of Angelique's
intentions. "It's you! your going to do something wicked aren't you."
Angelique gasps, as little Sarah speaks to her. "It was your voice I
heard in my dream... you love my brother, you want to merry him... but
he loves Josette not you!" Angelique tries to put on a friendly face as
she thinks of what to say. "I don't know what you are saying... I love
my lady... I do." Sarah is not afraid. "I'm going to tell my Father...
he will punish you, he will send you away." Angelique is filled with
apprehension, she can no longer allow little Sarah to speak.
Sarah turns to search for Joshua. With a quick wave of her hand,
Angelique places Sarah under a spell.... she can not move. "I"m sorry
Sarah, I can not allow you to interfere with my plans." Sarah falls to
the floor. Placing her hand upon Sarah's small throat, Angelique
declares... "You will not tell anyone anything because you can not
speak, you shall remain mute for as long as I need you to be.
Joshua appears at the top of the stairs. Seeing Sarah he rushing to
his daughter, taking her in his arms. "Sarah what is wrong..." Sarah
tries to speak but can not, looking instead to Angelique.
Angelique expresses astonished. " I do not understand Mr. Collins the
little miss just suddenly put her hand to her neck and fell to the
floor, I was trying to help her." Sarah shakes her head.. wanting to
warn her Father. Joshua does not pay attention. "I'm sorry Sarah you
are ill, I will call for the doctor in a little while." Joshua carries
Sarah to her room. Angelique smiles knowing that soon Barnabas would
turn to her.
