The Final Days and Nights of Sarah Collins chapter 12
Angelique watched as Joshua carried Sarah to her room, before taking
Sarah in Joshua turned to glair at the pretty young blond... Joshua
suspected the pretty girl of wanting his only son but dismissed his
thoughts knowing that Barnabas would soon become a married man.
"Barnabas is a man of good breeding, much to good for the likes of a
mere servant girl, no matter how beautiful she is in her own right."
Joshua knew his son would be a faithful and true husband to Josette.
As Joshua carries Sarah into her room, Angelique let go a small
laugh..."Well Sarah it seems you will not be able to attend your
brother's wedding, don't worry about that, neither will his bride..."
She laughs to herself.
Sarah sits on her bed, confused that her voice has left her... not
understanding why she could not utter a single sound... her Father
asking her questions she could not reply to. "Stay in bed Sarah, I will
send for the doctor." Sarah shakes her head... mouthing the word.
"No." Joshua leaves Sarah in her room, but does not close the door.
Walking out of her room Sarah stands at the top of the stairs, listening
to Barnabas speak to Josette's Father. Andr'e' du Pre's" How much
longer must we wait... should Josette be ready by now." HIs voice is
filed with exuberance.
Andr'e understands Barnabas' impatience... "Yes, Barnabas you are
correct... I know how you must feel... I was once a young bride groom
waiting for his bride, I will bring my daughter." Barnabas smiles.
"Thank you sir." Sarah looks down the hall were Josette's room is...
as she does the door at the other end of the long hall closes as if
someone had just went out.
Sarah moves into the shadows of the corner as she watches Josette's
Father walk to his daughter's room and knock. After no reply Andr'e
enters the room and comes out alone.
Sarah hurries into her room, she looks out her window... she can not
believe the scene before her, a carriage leaves the stables, sitting in
the front seat is Josette, her arm wrapped tightly around Jeremiah's
arm, Sarah can only mouth "noooo...noooo..." in silence, Jeremiah
brings his whip high into the air, letting it strike the horses...
Josette and Jeremiah smile to each other as the carriage races away, the
mark of the devils fork imprinted on their hands.
