The Final Days and Night's of Sarah Collins Chapter 15
The new morning promises a beautiful day. Angelique, disappointed that
Barnabas did not keep his word to see her last night comes to speak to
him, she finds him in the drawing room. "Excuse me Barnabas, may I have
a word with you." Looking at her Barnabas feels unworthy, bowing his
head, then looking away Barnabas confesses his true feelings. "I'm
sorry Angelique, I could not come to you... I can't help but still love
Josette, I will always love her, no matter what happens." This makes
Angelique very angry. "But you said that you hated her." Trying to
make Angelique understand Barnabas stands close to her. "I remember
what I said, I was angry and filled with jealousy, I don't feel that any
longer." Angelique leaves him hoping to think of another way to bring
Barnabas back to her.
Sarah hurries down the hallway to find Miss Winters... she sees Vickie
going away with Barnabas and the Countess du Pre's, following them
Sarah sees that they are hiding her from the Reverend Trask who had said
she was a witch after interrogating her cruelly, taking her to
Collinwood currently being built.
Entering the house Sarah is met by Aunt Abigail. "Sarah where have you
been, have you seen that Miss Winters." Sarah doesn't want her Aunt to
find Vickie so she must lie to protect her. "No I haven't see her all
day..." Taking her by the arm Abigail is forceful .."Your lying to me
child, is that what the witch had taught you... it is a sin to lie to
grown ups Sarah, not tell me the truth." Abigail is hurting Sarah's
arm, pulling away from her Sarah wants to cry but tries her best not to.
"I'm not lying, I don't know where Miss Winters is." Sarah runs up to
her room.
Angelique takes out Sarah's little doll. "If Barnabas will not marry
me I may have to kill little Sarah."
The midday sun is warm, the house is empty except for Sarah who is
sitting at the top of the stairs. Looking down she sees the door open,
in walks Jeremiah, Sarah is surprised, she wants to go to him but does
not move when her Father enters the room. "So you have returned. is
Josette with you." Jeremiah, understands what his family must have gone
though and feels ashamed. "Yes she is." Josette enters the house,
walking like a shy little girl she stands close to Jeremiah. Looking at
Joshua, Jeremiah says. "We are married Joshua." Before he can speak
Natalie, Andr'e, and Naomi also enter. Everyone is sad to hear of their
marriage. Sarah listens.
Barnabas enters the house, he sees Josette. Gong to her he hears his
Father say. "They are married." Barnabas does not believe what he
hears. "I must hear it from Josette." With trusting eyes Barnabas looks
at his Josette, who looks at him worried, saying shyly. "We are
married." Barnabas takes his anger out on Jeremiah... going to him
Barnabas strikes him on his face. "I challenge you sir! to a duel."
Jeremiah does not strike Barnabas in return, he knows that it is
Barnabas who is injured and so accepts the duel.
Barnabas and Jeremiah meet, Barnabas is wearing a medal that Angelique
had him wear to protect him from harm. Back to back they each take ten
paces, turn... Jeremiah does not fire his weapon, Barnabas fires his
hitting Jeremiah, he goes down mortally wounded. Josette runs up to
Jeremiah after the duel, cradling him she shouts at Barnabas. "You've
murdered my husband! Monster!" Barnabas is taken aback, he tries to
reach out to her but she does not look at him. Jeremiah is taken into
the house and placed in his bed... the doctor has said it was just a
matter of time, that Jeremiah was dying.
That evening Sarah goes into her Uncle's room, she takes his hand, but
he does not know she is there... his hand feels cool and soft. Sarah
prays that he will not die, she remembers her dream, going back to her
room Sarah cries for Jeremiah.
Angelique reminds Barnabas that it was she who saved his sister Sarah
from death. After Jeremiah dies Barnabas announces that he and
Angelique will wed.
