The Final Days and Night's of Sarah Collins Chapter 21
Sarah sat on the stair steps in the foyer... her Mother enters seeing
her Naomi goes and sits beside her.. "Sarah what are you doing."
Looking sad Sarah explains. "I'm waiting for Josette to come home."
Naomi sees that Sarah has something in her lap. What is that your
holding." Sarah holds up a large candle. "This is a candle that I made
for Josette, she seemed so sad, she misses Barnabas, just as I do."
Naomi looks away. "Yes my darling, we all miss Barnabas... but he is
far away, sailing on the great ocean. " "Yes I know, so I made this
candle to put in the window so that Barnabas will come home soon.... do
you like it." Naomi told Sarah it was the prettiest candle she had ever
seen. Sarah jumps up. "I'm going to take it to Josette's room and
surprise her." Naomi said. "That would be very nice of you, after that
you really should go to bed." Sarah nods. "Yes, Mother." Naomi watches
with great love as Sarah bounds up the stairs.
Entering Josette's room Sarah first places the candle on her bed...
thinking at bit and looking at the window, Sarah changes her mind. "I'll
put the candle on the window sill, and light it for Josette... that will
make Barnabas come home sooner. Sarah takes the candle and places it on
the sill of the window... as she is about to light it, she looks out the
window. "Is that Barnabas,... yes, it is Barnabas." Sarah calls
out... "Barnabas.." Looking up at Josette's widow Barnabas sees little
Sarah, he sees that she has also seen him... "Sarah.. no, you mustn't,
please no." Sarah shouts out again, she runs across the landing and
down stairway to the doors. Opening the door she again sees Barnabas.
"Barnabas wait... she runs after her brother. Sarah does not wonder why
Barnabas did not leave for England, she only knows that she wants to be
with her brother again.
Following Barnabas, Sarah finds herself in the cemetery, she is close
to the Collins family mausoleum. "Barnabas, why do you hide from me..
I'll find you." Sarah laughs thinking it a game that Barnabas is
playing. Looking at the iron door Sarah calls again. "Barnabas are you
in there..." Sarah opens the door, it creaks as she opens it slowly.
Once inside Sarah remembers the door to the other room, she hops that
what ever her Father had put inside does not come out. Looking around
the entire room Sarah sees that Barnabas is not there.
Turning around Sarah pushes at the door so she can go and look for
her brother, but the door will not open, it is stuck. Shaking it Sarah
shouts.. "Help, some one please open the door, let me out! Please."
But no one can hear the little girl's shouts for help. she does not
understand why Barnabas went away. Sarah sits on the floor of the
mausoleum by the door, it is a cold night and Sarah is only wearing her
night gown, robe and bonnet, she waits patiently for her brother.... as
she sits she says... "Barnabas, please find me, please Barnabas."
huddled by the wall Sarah falls to sleep.
Sarah has been in the cold mausoleum for many hours. Naomi went to
the goal to see Miss Winters who had made friends with the keeper of her
cell, his name is Peter Bradford, Peter believes that Miss Winter's is
innocent and has chosen to be her attorney at her trial.
While there Vickie remembers an entry in the Collins family history
book. "Mrs. Collins, will Sarah have a birthday soon." Naomi tells
Vickie that Sarah will have her eleventh birthday in a few days." "How
did you know that Sarah's birthday was coming." Please Mrs. Collins you
must go and make sure that Sarah does not leave the house for the next
three days... if she does." Vickie stops speaking. Naomi feels
afraid. " What do you mean... what will happen to my little Sarah,
please tell me." Victoria explains that Sarah Collins died in the year
1795 from exposure on her eleventh birthday. "But if you keep indoors
she will not die... you must keep her inside.." Naomi agrees to do as
Miss Winters says... Feeling worried for her only surviving child Naomi
returns to Collinwood so she may confirm that Sarah is well.
