The Final Days and Night's of Sarah Collins Chapter 23

=A0The darkness is pierced lightly with the burning of three candles...
the lid of a coffin rises, Barnabas Collins sits up and looks out on
another night. Swiftly leaving the confines of his daily prison Barnabas
opens the door that will lead him to the outside world... He hopes that
Ben will not be long in coming to the mausoleum and giving to him good
news that Sarah was found and that she is well and safe in Collinwood.

Stepping out into the stone walled room Barnabas turns and again pulls
the ring that rests in the lion's mouth.
=A0=A0
=A0=A0After the door closes Barnabas hears foot steps on the rain soaked
ground outside. He stops and hides in the darkest corner of the small
cold room. Ben opens the gate and steps inside, Barnabas immediately
goes to his side. "Ben, you must tell me how Sarah is, tell me she is
well and home again." =A0 Ben stairs at the floor, not saying a word.
Barnabas becomes afraid and angry at the same time. "Ben!" Taking the
large man Barnabas, with his Vampire strength holds him fast, causing
him pain, Ben falls down to one knee. "Mr.Barnabas, your hurting me."
Barnabas lets go and Ben stands before his master. Asking again after
Sarah, Barnabas waits for Ben to reply.

=A0Ben begins. "I found Sarah shortly after you came back here, she was
scared and didn't seem to know me, but I took her home, we got caught in
the storm, we both got soaked... she was so cold Mr. Barnabas."
Impatiently Barnabas asks if Sarah mentioned seeing him. "Did Sarah tell
my Mother and Father about seeing me." Ben Shook his head. "For some
reason she can't speak... she is afraid all the time, the doctor said
its only a matter of time, if Sarah lives or.... dies... if she lasts
out this night she will be all right." =A0 Barnabas walks to the gate.
=A0 "I must see her Ben." Ben becomes frightened for Barnabas. "You know
you can't go see her, your Mother is with her all the time, and when she
is not then your cousin Millicent is tending to her."
=A0=A0=A0
=A0Barnabas will not be deterred. "Ben you must help me, it is my fault
Sarah came out that night, I should not have tried to go see Josette, I
did not know Sarah would come out looking for me." Taking hold of Ben's
coat lapel Barnabas implores his friends aid. =A0 Ben understands and
promises to get Barnabas into Collinwood. "We can go though a back door
I found when I was moving some things for Mr. Joshua, you can wait there
and when I get Sarah alone you'll know." Barnabas thanks Ben and asks
that he go right away. "Hurry Ben I will not be far behind."

=A0Inside Collinwood Sarah sleeps in her bed, she is weak and is
becoming weaker. Naomi is sitting at her bedside. =A0 In enters Cousin
Millicent. "Cousin Naomi you really must get some rest, you've not eaten
all day and I'm told that you didn't sleep very much... Please let me
stay with Cousin Sarah, she will be fine with me watching over her,
truly." Naomi does not wish to leave her little girl but knows that
Millicent is correct, tired from worry and lack of nourishment Naomi
gave in to Millicent's kindness to watch over Sarah. "Very well, but
should Sarah wake or should anything happen you must call me right
away." Millicent agrees to call Naomi should anything change. "Oh yes,
Cousin I will." Changing the subject, Millicent says. " I'm sorry that I
can not allow my brother Daniel to see Sarah, she may be contagious and
I can't have Daniel ill." Naomi did not wish to explain that Daniel was
safe from catching what Sarah had acquired from the storm, but was must
too tired. Naomi leaves to her room to rest.

=A0Waiting out by the back door, Ben watches as Naomi leaves Sarah's
room, he knows that he could easily draw Millicent away for a short
while. Entering the room Ben asks Millicent. =A0 Miss Collins, I was
told to come and relieve you and watch after Sarah." Hearing his voice
Sarah wakes, she looks at Ben and smiles. =A0 Millicent notices and
says. "Why Ben, Sarah likes you, she is smiling... I think she is
getting better, I will go and tell Cousin Naomi." Ben tries to detour
Millicent by telling her that Naomi was in another part of the house.
"Mrs. Collins went down to speak to the cook or perhaps she might be at
the other end of the house, I think you should go look in both places."
Millicent agrees and goes off in search of her Cousin.

=A0=A0Ben sits by Sarah's side. "Are you feeing better..." Sarah's small
smile assures Ben that she is a little better. " Some one is waiting to
see you, its your brother Barnabas." =A0 Sarah frowns and looks away.
Ben goes to the door, he opens it. In one quick motion Barnabas enters
the room. He goes to Sarah's side, Sarah looks away, she is afraid of
her brother. Sitting on the side of her bed Barnabas tries to comfort
his little sister. "Sarah, I'm sorry for not bringing you home, please
forgive me... I do love you." Sarah turns her head, she looks at her
brother... and quietly speaks. "Hold ... me." =A0 Barnabas reaches out
his arms. "Of course Sarah." In her loving brother's arms Sarah brings
her small hand to his cheek. "I... love... you... Barnabas.... I
.....always.... will." Suddenly Sarah's eyes slowly close... her hand
falls from Barnabas' cheek, Sarah falls backwards...Barnabas whispers
"Sarah... No... no...please no." =A0 Barnabas pulls Sarah into his
embrace. Deep within him Barnabas cries out in pain. =A0 Sarah Collins
dies in her brother's arms.
