You don't automatically become a diabetic, but it's certainly possible
and happens often enough. They transplant islet cells from the
pancreas into the liver to keep the Diabetes from happening. Sometimes
it works, sometimes not. The transplant is so that cells can form in
the liver to produce insulin, which regulates your blood sugar.
However, there is more than ONE type of Diabetes and only your *own*
islet cells are used for such a transplant, because your *own* cells
will not be rejected by your liver, where somebody else's very easily
could be. Islet cell transplants can combat Type 1 Diabetes very well
from what I read, but not all cases of Diabetes, so it's kind of touch
and go.

I have a strong *feeling* that the reason that Lexie said that he's
going to die is because his pancreas is probably inflamed. When it's
inflamed, you cannot digest your food without suffering from very
intense and severe pain. That's why we keep seeing Bo in such eye
squinting and cringing pain and why they're giving him the jello.

The jello is easier for him to digest, plus if I recall right, jello
has egg membrane (or maybe it's chicken bone marrow...I can't
recall....) inbedded into the gelatin crystals, so it probably
provides at least a *little?* bit of protein when you cannot swallow
solid foods? (That's why it's said to make your fingernails stronger
and why strict vegans steer clear from eating it. It doesn't look like
it, but it contains animal by product via the gelatin.) If it's
*THAT* painful to eat to begin within with, believe me, your brain
will find ways to convince you that you're not hungry. (That's how my
grandmother's younger sister died back in the early 90's.) If you
don't eat, you'll die. Doctors say all the time what their particular
spin on a situation is. Even though you *can* survive without a
pancreas, it's a hard life to endure if it's *entirely* removed. You
have to change to a high carb diet and rearrange your life, basically.
No creamy desserts...very low fat intake, etc.

These islet cells for the transplant are taken out of the pancreas in
a lab and then put back into the body via the liver. *THAT* would
bother me. Anytime that they take something out of you, bring it to a
lab and then put part of it back into your body it worries me. Doctors
in Maryland and Virginia reported on one website that it's becoming
more widely received, though.
