confused

I'm confused. The beginning narration said they would lose a husband
and a friend. The husband was likely Victor, but who is the friend?

I don't see how Tom could be dead, or any of Lynette's kids -- they
were all in the basement.

This all seems a little loose to me; I suspect the writer's strike is
to blame for this vague finale.
