In one episode, Joe Friday interrogates a mobster suspected of murdering an
electronic manufacturer who refused to pay "protection money." Since
these
episodes are based on real cases, it seems apparent that the FBI bungled
the
real case when the victim tried to report the extortion attempt. The fact
that he was killed, reveals the likelihood that the mobsters found out
that
he had called police, and took action to eliminate him as a witness while
the police and FBI decided what to do. No other explanation adds up so
plausibly.
