Younger actors would have been okay, but the real crime was *throwing
out the story*. No over-arching/multi-part story = Not worth watching.
I remember just before season 2 talking to Majel Roddenberry via email
about the upcoming changes. Majel insisted the show should be like
Star Trek TOS & TNG - stand-alone short stories. I tried to explain to
her that the fans prefer multi-part stories that evolve over time (like
Babylon5 & Lost), and they wouldn't enjoy simplistic single-episode
stories.
But Majel pressed-on with her plans. She threw the large story in the
trashcan. Predictably, season 2 was all stand-alone short stories and
the result was a crappy season. Season 3 was better, but still boring.
Each episode felt like a repeat of the previous one.
..
Later in season 4 they dug the "large story" out of the trash & tried
to revive the style of season 1. Season 4 had some great episodes
(like the sequel to Sandoval's Run), but the magic was gone.
