Same thing happened to ANDROMEDA, dumping the arc for stand alone eps.

they got rid of the "alien" in the crew, bit by bit, the furry Bem, the
tailed-Trance, the Purple Trance, the spiked alien until you had an all
humanoid--and all tan--crew)
