Well, that and Clemens was a selfish creep even when he pitched for
Boston. 
Remember his complaints that the Red Sox wouldn't open up Fenway Park to
let 
his kid's Little League team play for free? One of many a**holish moments 
from a guy whose career is filled with them. Beckham has always seemed to
be 
a fairly decent guy who appreciates the fans which ups his public acclaim 
factor greatly.  Same reason why no one in San Fran is leaping to the 
defense of Barry Bonds these days.  Sure the guy played some great, if 
chemically enhanced, baseball; but he's always been a jerk, so once he
fell 
from grace, he had no reserve of goodwill from the fans to fall back on.
