When you've got a man holding you at gun point is it a good
idea to pronounce the patient dead? Unless you want the
guy to kill everyone in the area you should at least keep the
patient alive. Even if it means the patient is in a coma
at least it keeps you (the ER personnel alive.)
Logic would tell you that once you indicated the patient is
going to die that the guy would kill everyone in sight.
