I hope that included some alcohol of the pricier sort.

Context for our cousins from Mars: In the US, public radio and TV stations

hold pledge drives 3 or 4 times a year. In appreciation for subscriptions,

they give out gifts. The entry level gift has traditionally been a tote
bag 
with the station's logo on it. The relevance to Trafford and Timmah's 
exchange above is that you typically get a bag worth maybe $5 for a pledge
on 
the order of $50. It's supposed to be a token of appreciation for a
donation, 
not a purchase.
