In the film, Ruse quickly answers Stein's question of what theories
Darwinian scientists have about the origins of the first living cell
with this example as one he seemed to believe in, at least that's the
impression I got from the confidence in his voice and defense of the
theory. Only when Stein laughs a bit and questions him further does he
lose confidence, stumbles a bit, then retreats.  The paragraph you
cited does not convey what actually happened in the film, it suggests
that Ruse simply plucked a theory out of a bag.

I would suggest that you see the film and draw your own conclusions.
