You might be right, but I'd be more inclined to believe that Michael was
desperately afraid of Sonny's wrath if it weren't for the fact that the
little brat has been running away and doing exactly what he wanted for
YEARS
and has never gotten more than a "time out" from his scary mobster dad.
This kid has never gotten so much as a swat on the butt with a newspaper
for
any of the dumb things he's done.  If he had believed Sonny's threat, he
wouldn't have picked up that gun AFTER Sonny had made it.  That makes me
question how seriously he believed that his dad would ever physically harm
him.

At the very least, he could have found a public phone and just made an
anonymous call telling the 911 operator where Kate was before he ran away.
He could have pretended that he just FOUND Kate shot after he pitched the
gun in the harbor.  No one would think he had any reason to shoot her.
