I remember Stern from his WCCC days in Hartford and later on WNBC NYC 
Days.  He played music. He left and went to FM where his trash mouth was 
running all the time. Imus was a DJ when he first came to WNBC.  He 
lasted a few years and was canned for drug abuse.  It got so bad the 
station used to have an unofficial daily pool going as to whether he 
would show up late or at all. He was clearly out of it some mornings 
with a hangover or semi spaced out. After rehab, he wound up going back 
to Cleveland spinning Country music.  On his second tour in NY he was 
much more talk, until he hit the format he uses today.  Neither are DJs 
today.

One other name to toss in the mix is Joey Reynolds.  He now does an all 
night talk show. (syndicated by WOR)  He was considered one of best DJs 
ever. He was creative and "crazy".  He got fired from many times for his 
antics. The big but was that he always landed on his feet. He was a DJ 
in many of the top markets.

It is hard to describe the power of DJs in the 50s and 60s, when they 
were on powerful AM stations.  At night they commanded a large 
following. Once the FM band got going, in the mid 60s after some 
technical improvements, most of the music moved to FM. This pretty much 
  relegated AM to talk radio and other satellite fed fare.

Most of the kids who started listening to radio in the 70s through today 
don't really have any appreciation.  As my kids would say, we only 
listen to AM on snow days to see if school was canceled ;)

With thousands of stations via the Internet, I-pods and new technology, 
many kids are moving "up" from FM.  The only thing constant in life is 
change.
