Actually, his primary stain was for being to Hawkish. The "how far 
right?" was as much a cold warrior label as anything else.

Hardly. He would still be a Repubican, but of the cranky GHW Bush or 
John McCain flavor.

No argument. The lead****p of both parties have swung out to the 
extremes. The Democrats can claim no moral or intellectual superiority 
there.

Goldwater would be quite comfortable with either McCain or with 
Leiberman. (He would have no use for  a Specter.) The question still 
remains, where would moderate Midwest and Eastern Democrats of the past 
align themselves in today's political world: hang with moderate or 
"maverick" Republicans or become an outcast Democrat, like Leiberman?
