Quick comments on two more Season 3 episodes
3-6 Take the Deviled Eggs...
I like the Lorelai-Rory scene where they're discussing the shower
invitation and more broadly, Rory's relationship with her father.
Rory's vague feelings of guilt are something we see repeated later.
As is Lorelai's reassurance of Rory. Whatever the ups and downs of
her own relationship with Christopher, Lorelai does consistently
take the position that it shouldn't affect Rory's relationship with
him.
Sherry can be a steamroller at times. Although at least part of
the reason that Lorelai let herself be talked into attending the
shower was because she thought it would make Rory feel more
comfortable. Then, of course, it ends up being Rory talking
Lorelai past a meltdown. Don't think Sherry realized that
everything she said in that conversation with Lorelai was reopening
old wounds.
Also, Jess turns out to be not quite as much of a rebel as he likes
to portray himself. And Luke has great fun teasing him about this.
We also learn the name of Christopher and Sherry's baby in this
episode. Gigi (OK, technically that's the nickname). Pronounced
like the abbreviation for the show.
3-8 Let The Games Begin
The trip to Yale. Richard manages to make all three of the Gilmore
Girls angry at him. Although Rory isn't all that angry. She's
mostly upset that she wasn't able to prepare for the interview
because she didn't know about it. And, I think, a bit hurt that
Richard didn't realize that all he had to do was ask her to do the
interview.
(Lorelai still wouldn't have been thrilled, but she'd have calmed
down much more quickly than she actually did.)
And while Richard's ploy does get both Lorelai and Rory looking at
the Yale brochure, it still seems counterproductive since he could
have gotten that by just being honest with Rory. The "master
manipulator" didn't realize that this was a time that he didn't
need to manipulate anyone.
Incidentally, this episode had an especially misleading promo. The
promo said the trip was Lorelai's idea and that it was to separate
Rory and Jess.
Luke's rules. The word "counterproductive" comes to mind again.
