Notes on two more recently rewatched Season 3 episodes.
3-13 Dear Richard and Emily
The main plot interweaves events surrounding the birth of Chris and
Sherry's daughter Gigi with flashbacks to events leading up to and
following Rory's birth. We see in the flashbacks a Richard and
Emily planning out the whole of L&C's future, a rebellious Lorelai
insisting on going her own way, and a Christopher that's basically
drifting with the currents. Kind of like how they interact today,
except that they've had years to reinforce the patterns.
An interesting subplot was Rory at the hospital. Appearing calm in
front of Sherry but having a mini-meltdown when talking to Lorelai.
"I need you. I need you here. I need you now. I cannot do this
alone. I need my mommy and dammit I don't care who knows it!"
And Lorelai immediately agrees to come to the hospital, to Emily's
puzzlement (Emily doesn't quite seem to get that it isn't about
Sherry, it's about being there for RORY.).
And Rory is calm again once she knows that Lorelai is on her way.
Other developments. More friction between Jess and Dean. (I still
suspect that Dean hasn't yet abandoned the plan of getting Rory
back.) Luke and Nicole start dating. And while my reaction isn't
quite as strong as E&R, I will say that Lorelai and Rory don't
really seem the backpacking type. Finally, Lorelai buys Emily a
DVD player, in what seems to be an attempt at bonding with Emily.
3-14 Swan Song
We continue the tradition of disastrous first Friday Night dinners
involving Rory's boyfriends. Interesting that Emily stays pleasant
in front of Rory and then immediately goes into rant-mode when she
talks to Lorelai. I liked Lorelai's non-reaction to the rant. Of
course, E&L aren't that far apart in their current assessment of
Jess, just in what Lorelai should do about it.
A theme running through this episode is secrets. Lane and Dave are
keeping their relationship secret both from their bandmates and
from Mrs. Kim. Rory keeps a secret from Jess, and then Jess keeps
a more serious secret from Rory (and doesn't tell her the real
secret even after Luke's little lecture).
And then there's the non-secret. Lorelai learns from Rory that
Rory's feelings for Jess have progressed further than Lorelai is
comfortable with. Not that they've done anything much yet, but
still...
