Notes on two more recently rewatched Season 3 episodes.
3-17 A Tale of Poes and Fire
One main plotline revolves around a fire at the Independence Inn
and its aftermath. The fire sets in motion events that in future
episodes will lead to Lorelai opening her own inn. Another
plotline is about Rory deciding which college to attend (liked
Luke's awkward congratulatory hug). She starts with her usual
lists which end up veering in favor of Yale. We also see Lorelai's
full acceptance of this and how she convinces Rory that she's fine
with Rory attending Yale. Redecorating Rory's room was a nice
touch, although I'm not sure when Lorelai had time to do this.
Other developments. We get a hint that Jess may be ditching
school. Fun to see Sookie go from taking over Luke's diner to
teaming up with Luke. Lane's little plan for getting her mother's
approval to date Dave hits a snag as her fake boyfriend Young Chui
falls for her. More Rory-Paris bonding as Rory basically orders
Paris to start reconnecting with her life. Bad vibes from Nicole
and Lindsay toward, respectively, Lorelai and Rory. Although the
bad vibes from Nicole are at least partially Luke's fault. Talking
repeatedly about Lorelai was perhaps not the best move for Luke on
the first date...
And we close on Lorelai, Sookie, and Michel all looking in shock at
the damage to the Inn.
3-19 Keg! Max!
The opening scene shows Lorelai actually seeming to miss attending
the Friday night dinners. Later she runs into Max at a Booster
Club meeting and eventually reaches closure on their relationship.
And we see the Inn winding slowly down toward closing.
Some beginnings. Lane's band get their first gig, before they have
a name. Also Michel gets his puppies. Lane gets drunk for the
first time. Which leads to her calling her mother and telling her
everything about her and Dave. Ironically, this actually leads (in
the next episode) to Mrs. Kim letting Lane and Dave go to the prom
together. Lane has two serious boyfriends over the course of the
series, and Mrs. Kim accepts both of them. A clue that Mrs. Kim
isn't quite as inflexible as her image (Rory reminds Lane that Mrs.
Kim is more flexible than she appears in one episode).
In a lot of ways, this episode revolves around Jess. Early on,
Jess learns that he's not graduating. Which starts a sulk that
lasts the rest of the episode. Which leads to an argument with
Rory. And a brawl with Dean, when Dean jumps to a wrong
conclusion. All of which sets up the breakup of Rory and Jess.
I've also always suspected that the brawl led to Dean proposing to
Lindsay. That the proposal was Dean's attempt to prove (to himself
or to Lindsay, or both) that he wasn't still in love with Rory.
Which wouldn't have been quite as big an issue without the brawl.
(Another misleading promo note. The promo the WB ran for this
episode seemed to be trying to suggest that Jess actually assaulted
Rory.)
