Some comments on two more recently rewatched Season 4 episodes.
4-6 An Affair to Remember
More "beginnings" in this episode. The official start of Richard
and Jason's partnership. Kirk's first date with Lulu, who actually
likes him (somewhat to Luke's puzzlement). The "practice date" was
fun. Apparently one thing Kirk didn't practice was Lulu liking
him...
Exploration of the complicated Lorelai-Emily relationship. The
Friday night dinner looks almost like ... a friendly family dinner.
Then we get fallout from a bit of Lorelai-secrecy (foreshadowing a
bigger bit of secrecy later in the season). Followed by the scene
where Emily tells Lorelai about the cancelled launch party. Liked
the way Lorelai's reaction was portrayed--initially angry at Emily
(because she initially thinks the cancellation was Emily's idea)
changing to sympathy as she realized the actual situation. Lorelai
doesn't like it when Emily seems TOO defeated.
(There's a hint of the future Richard-Emily problems in the way
that the launch party was cancelled.)
The cancellation prompts Lorelai to confront Jason. And Jason to
try to recast the situation in a way that leaves Lorelai still
upset, but also intrigued.
We also see that Yale isn't in Rory's comfort zone yet (granted,
Paris could get on anyone's nerves, and Tanna can be almost as
irritating in her own way).
And Lorelai loses patience with both Sookie and Rory. Liked the
Lorelai-rant, even though it was partly displaced anger at Jason.
4-8 The Festival of Living Art
Rather liked the concept of the Festival. And Kirk getting too
much into his role was fun. Also liked the way Luke "complained"
that he was going to be asked to fix the Last Supper table. One
almost gets the impression that he actually looking forward to
it...
Also Rory notices signs that Lorelai is economizing--clipping
coupons, buying a cheaper brand of detergent. More hints will come
in later episodes...
And Lane's band gets a new guitarist. One somewhat older than the
rest of the band...
This is also the episode where Jackson and Sookie's first child is
born--several days late. Of course, the "baby pager" Sookie gives
Lorelai goes off at a very bad time--right when Lorelai is on
stage.
And Luke's marriage may be on again. Nicole comes to the diner to
suggest that they postpone the divorce. It is possible that this
isn't a good idea...
